On 18th January 2024, the Thai government unveiled its overall strategy to meet its target of attracting 40 million foreign travellers this year and reaching more than US$98 billion in tourism revenue. The country plans to not only attract more visitors but also entice them to stay longer and spend more. It was revealed that it is also looking to promote new tourism routes in second-tier provinces, festivals, and events as well as ‘soft power’ products. Not surprisingly, coastal getaways continue to be a popular choice for tourists, especially at places like Phi Phi Island. Resort options at this idyllic destination include SAii Phi Phi Island Village from where visitors can also access the famed Maya Bay which will no doubt be a key draw in 2024 as well.
China remains an important source market for tourism in Thailand and the country is hoping to welcome a minimum of eight million travellers from China this year; with this in mind, the Thai government is hoping to launch a visa-free scheme between the two nations as well. From hosting roadshows in countries like South Korea and strengthening bilateral ties with Laos to increasing chartered flights linking new cities in Russia and China, many other initiatives are also being planned.
