Thai Pongal Celebrated in Sri Lanka – Giving Thanks to the Harvest

A festival to give thanks to a bountiful harvest, Thai Pongal was celebrated this month in Sri Lanka. The official day fell on 14th January 2022, with Tamil communities observing various customs and rituals including showing gratitude to ‘Surya’, the Sun God. As part of the traditions, a new clay pot is used to boil milk; the milk boiling over or ‘Pongal’ is believed to be a sign of good luck. Following this, a sweet dish is made using ingredients like rice, cashew nuts, raisins and jaggery.

During Thai Pongal, it’s customary for families to get together, while Hindu devotees also attend kovils (Hindu temples). Interestingly, the second day of the festival is set aside to honour the cattle who help farmers in the field.
