Following the closing of Maya Bay that has been subject to severe damage due to over tourism, the Airports of Thailand (AOT) Board of Directors approved the setting up of two new airports. The airports are planned to be constructed in Chiang Mai and Phuket. The new airport in Chiang Mai will be located in Lamphun’s Ban Thi district while the new airport in Phuket will be located in Phang Nga’s Ban Khok Kruad district.
Both Chiang Mai and Phuket already have an airport each, however, the additional airports will be set up to meet the heavy demand that has hit the tourism sector in Thailand. The good side to this would be that hotels in Phuket and hotels in Chiang Mai can benefit immensely from this new project. More visitors will make their reservations in places like Anantara Chiang Mai Resort as it is now easier to reach with two airports available.
