Thailand Focuses on Sustainable & Responsible Tourism – Green Hotels Also Seen as Key

At the beginning of this year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced that the country would be focusing on responsible tourism as well as sustainability in the tourism industry. As stated by the deputy governor of TAT, Thanet Phetsuwan, at the Bangkok Post Year-End Forum, there would be a shift from a quantity-focused strategy to more quality-based tourism. Green hotels and resorts are also seen as vital for such a strategy to meet the global demand for sustainable holidays, especially from travel agents in Europe.

Examples of such Thai properties would be those that have garnered Green Globe certification such as SAii Phi Phi Island Village which has implemented a Save Our Sharks programme and CSR and conservation initiatives; those based at this Phi Phi Island holiday resort can also visit its Marine Discovery Centre to find out more about making a positive environmental impact as well as enjoy sustainable excursions to Maya Bay.

To reinforce its push for such tourism, the Tourism Authority of Thailand also highlighted its sustainable initiatives at the recently concluded Arabian Travel Market. At this event, held in Dubai from 1st to 4th May 2023, the country showcased its ‘Visit Thailand Year 2023: Amazing New Chapters’ campaign focusing on a sustainable tourism concept; this brought to light meaningful travel experiences which could be enjoyed on a Thai holiday which would benefit the environment and local communities too.
