During the second quarter of 2023, Thailand witnessed a notable deceleration in its economic recovery. The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) officially confirmed on August 21st that the real gross domestic product (GDP) growth had declined from 2.6 percent year-over-year in the first quarter to 1.8 percent in the second quarter, as reported by The Bangkok Post.
This marked a significant departure from the previous 2.6 percent rise seen from January to March, falling behind the consensus projection of 3.1 percent growth in the second quarter, according to a Reuters poll. Despite these economic challenges, Thailand’s tourism sector showed resilience. Total revenue from tourism surged by 71.7 percent compared to the same quarter in 2022. As entry restrictions were lifted, the tourism sector, contributing around 18 per cent of GDP, began to recover as the COVID-19 pandemic eased. The Tourism Authority of Thailand anticipates that 29 million foreign visitors will visit Thailand in 2023, marking a significant increase from 11.5 million in 2022, although it remains below the pre-pandemic 2019 figures of 39 million visitors. Destinations such as Phuket remain at the top of people’s vacation lists and have enjoyed stays at properties such as Travelodge Phuket Town, a conveniently located Phuket Old Town hotel.
