The Contribution of Artists To the “People’s Struggle” in Sri Lanka Put in the Spotlight

A non-violent movement that demanded change from the government, the “People’s Struggle”, locally known as the “Aragalaya”, in Sri Lanka was a time that also saw artists join in this peaceful mass protest; this was highlighted in an online article published on the Asia Foundation website on 31st August 2022, which went on to reveal how artists across the nation joined together at the main protest site for various performances and displays. These included holding theatre, music and dance productions as well as showcasing sculptures, murals and digital art that provided a “voice” for the people and created awareness too.

There was a pop-up gallery featuring artistic creations from the “People’s Struggle” that were visually arresting and thought-provoking as well. Of course, the country has always had a rich tradition in art with Sri Lankan artists offering insights into the local culture, traditions and beliefs. Some of these works can be seen online at websites like Sri Lankan Art Gallery where art lovers can purchase these distinctive artworks.
