Held annually, generally, in the month of August, the Esala Perahera is known to people outside of Sri Lanka as “The Elephant Festival”. But the reality is much, much deeper. It commemorates the first teaching delivered by Lord Buddha following his enlightenment. It is also done to celebrate the Sacred Tooth Relic that is situated in the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. The festival involves elephants adorned in decorative dress, whole troupes of dancers, fire-breathers, acrobats and festive lights and colours.
The dates for the Esala Perahera in 2019 are 5th to 15th August and travellers planning to visit around that time can incorporate it into a list of Kandy tours. Those planning on attending have the option of making use of car rental services the likes of Casons Rent a Car Sri Lanka that offers driver-guides for a trip to Kandy.
