Every year, in the months of July or August, Sri Lankans all across the country gather in the sacred city of Kandy to witness the historic Esala Perahera, a tradition that has been passed down for generations in the local culture. Visitors planning to travel to Sri Lanka will be able to partake in this age-old tradition which will take place from 02nd to 12th August 2022 in Kandy. A deeper insight into the city and its attractions can be explored on Truly Sri Lanka.
The tradition of the Kandy Esala Perahera is primarily performed to honour the most sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha. The festival features dancers in traditional attire, jugglers, fire breathers, musicians and a majestically decorated elephant that carries the sacred tooth in a golden casing. The festivities of the Esala Perahera can be witnessed for over a week as the processions are carried out for a period of ten days.
