The Maldives Celebrates its National Day – Remembering a Great Victory & Local Heroes

This month saw the Maldives celebrate its National Day, a time to remember and honour the victory of Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-Auzam who helped to drive away Portuguese invaders in the 16th century. Locally known as ‘Qaumee Dhuvas’, it falls on the first day of Rabi’ al-Awwal, the Islamic calendar’s third month and this year it was on 16th September. The Portuguese had previously taken over the country in 1558 after killing the sultan in battle; however, they began to face resistance from Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-Auzam who along with his brothers, Hassan and Ali, subsequently raised a force to defeat the invaders in 1573.

A public holiday, the National Day is celebrated in various ways especially in the capital, Male, within easy reach of private island properties like Velassaru Maldives. For those who visit the city on this day from such a luxury hotel, Maldives cultural experiences abound and include the chance to witness flag-raising ceremonies, parades and even fireworks.
