The Maldives Continues its Tourism Recovery – Russia Remains a Top Source Market

One of the rare tourism success stories both during and after the global pandemic, the Maldives remains a benchmark for how countries can overcome challenges and draw travellers from around the world. Since this South Asian nation reopened its borders, Russia has emerged as a key source market and has contributed significantly to the increasing number of foreign arrivals. This has been witnessed this year as well, with both Russia and India alternating between the top two source markets.

According to the statistics put out by the Maldives Ministry of Tourism, as of 19th July 2023, Russia had retaken first place from India to become the country’s leading tourist market with 119,405 arrivals; India was close behind in second place with 118,638 arrivals, followed by the United Kingdom, China, and Germany respectively. At the time, a total of 1,016,719 travellers had arrived at this destination which is looking to record 1.8 million tourists by year’s end. For such international visitors, staying at a Maldives water villa with private pool options remains a popular choice at private island resorts. These include properties like Baros Maldives which cater to couples and families who are continuing to propel the nation’s tourism recovery.
