All travellers visiting Sri Lanka (other than those with a valid Sri Lankan passport) must now pay for a mandatory COVID-19 local insurance cover. This announcement which was made in February 2022 further stipulated that the 12 USD cost of the insurance would offer a 75,000 USD coverage for one month. This entry requirement applies to both non-vaccinated and fully vaccinated tourists.
This COVID-19 travel insurance offers cover for several key aspects; these include room charges at government-designated hospitals and intermediary centres, intensive care charges and expenses for PCR testing and drugs. Apart from an online portal (https://portal.pionline.lk/covidinsurance/), the insurance cover can be purchased on arrival but before exiting the airport. Since fully vaccinated tourists don’t have to quarantine, they are free to travel around Sri Lanka and find accommodation at the best hotels in Nuwara Eliya. This includes ‘Safe & Secure’ certified properties like Heritance Tea Factory where guests have the unique chance to stay at a converted 19th-century tea factory.
