Buddhists in Sri Lanka gathered to celebrate one of the most important religious observances, Vesak day Festival on the 10th of May this year. Vesak Poya as it is known locally is of great historical and religious significance as it memorializes the birth, enlightenment and the passing away of Lord Buddha. While Vesak is celebrated across the island, the main festivities are held in Colombo and its suburbs which are in close proximity to some of the luxurious Colombo hotels such as the Berjaya Hotel Colombo. During Vesak, pilgrims dressed in fully white fill temples, offering prayers and flowers to the Buddha. Many houses, streets and institutions are decorated with bright lanterns and seasonal festivities take place which mark this significant day such as Dansals taking place across the country. Vesak, which falls on the full moon poya day in May every year, feature celebrations that last for a period of weeks or even a month.
