Vesak Day – Sri Lanka Celebrates the Most Significant Event in Buddhism

Vesak Day 2017 was celebrated with much devotion in Sri Lanka this year. The event added more significance to Sri Lankans as the International Day of Vesak was hosted by Sri Lanka this year. An International Buddhist Conference was also held to mark this historic event and saw the participation of over 400 delegates from over 100 countries. Vesak Day fell on the 10th of this year but festivities lasted for about 3 days. These festivities take form of almsgiving stalls, the making of lanterns and the display of magnificent pandols. Some of the best of Vesak celebrations took place in Colombo, where certain areas were sectioned off as “Vesak Kalapa”. The Sirasa Vesak Kalapaya was one of the noteworthy ones and took place in the heart of Colombo where most of the finest luxury apartments in Sri Lanka such as the Capitol TwinPeaks are situated at. There were many crowds who attended this event.

Vesak which is celebrated by Buddhists around the island marks the birth, enlightenment and the attaining of Nibbana of the Lord Gautama Buddha.
