Vesak Festival – One of the Most Sacred Festivals in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a wondrous island packed with many delights for all kinds of tourists. Whether you’re exploring its abundant wildlife, experiencing its beautiful beaches or simply relaxing away at the many fine beach and colonial hotels in Sri Lanka, the likes of the Mount Lavinia Hotel; one thing is for sure, your holiday will be anything but ordinary.

One of the most extraordinary of Sri Lanka’s attractions is its festivals, and one of these best of these is the Vesak festival. For those who might not know, the Vesak Festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing away of the Lord Gautama Buddha. To celebrate this sacred event, Buddhists in the country organize such many wonderful festivities that can last up to weeks and even a month long. Some of these include extravagant pandols depicting the life story of the Buddha and almsgiving stalls giving away free refreshments for all. The streets are decorated with dazzling lights and paper lanterns and so are most of the houses. One of the best places to be in Sri Lanka during Vesak is at Colombo or Kandy where most of the major celebrations takes place.
