Tradition, family, and festivities light up Vietnam’s New Year
Vietnam celebrated its traditional Lunar New Year, Tet, a festival deeply rooted in the nation’s history since the era of Đại Việt in the 10th century. Falling on 29 January in 2025 and scheduled for 17 February in 2026, Tet marks the start of spring and the new wet rice cultivation cycle.
In the lead-up to the holiday, cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi transformed into vibrant displays of flowers, lanterns, and cultural decorations. Families prepared homes, cleaned thoroughly, and purchased special foods, including sticky rice cakes and pork sausages. Midnight fireworks lit up the skies, with Da Nang’s Dragon Bridge showcasing flame-breathing dragons and Hanoi deploying 2,000 drones for a record-breaking aerial display.
During Tet, most businesses close, allowing families to honour ancestors at temples and exchange lucky money. Visitors seeking comfort could stay at renowned properties like Avani Hotels & Resorts, counted among the best hotels in Vietnam, offering easy access to the festivities and cultural experiences.
