Whale Watching Season in Mirissa and Kalpitiya

Mirissa and Kalpitiya are two famous locations to witness the amazing and gigantic whales in Sri Lanka. The season to watch whales begins in January every year with whales and dolphins seen in the open seas parading their presence in the Southern and North-Western coasts of Sri Lanka. During the season, almost all hotels in Tangalle get pre-booked with full occupancy by those who travel across the seas to Sri Lanka to watch these beautiful creatures of the sea.Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort is one of the luxury hotels that offer spacious accommodation for whale watching enthusiasts.

The oceans around Kalpitiya are frequented by sperm whales, blue whales, pigmy sperm whales and pilot whales seen gathering in large pods of more than fifty in a group, some in very shallow waters. Large herds are mostly seen gathering around the Dutch Reef. It is interesting to observe that the whales are accompanied by large groups of spinner dolphins to add fun and excitement in the whole exercise of watching them do their acrobatic stunts. They can be found within just about one hour boat ride from Kalpitiya harbour.
