World Tourism Day Celebrated in Sri Lanka – A Focus on “Tourism and Green Investments”

Sri Lanka celebrated World Tourism Day on 27 September 2023 with various events and celebrations organised by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. The theme for this year was “Tourism and Green Investments” with a focus on sustainability as well as investing in the planet and the people. This is seen as a vital aspect for the tourism industry in the country with travellers considering the social and environmental initiatives of a destination before they visit. Having such an eco-friendly goal also helps to ensure long-term success that benefits all stakeholders in the industry.

While events were held from 25 to 27 September to mark World Tourism Day, the country coincidentally also reached a significant milestone on 26 September when it welcomed the one-millionth tourist for the year. With more arrivals expected in the months to come, Sri Lanka tourism is looking to end the year on a high. Since the nation reopened its borders after the pandemic, it has seen a steady increase in arrivals as travellers look to not only enjoy beachside getaways but also, cultural adventures at hotels near Dambulla; these include well-placed properties such as Amaya Lake Dambulla where tourists can experience eco-friendly activities, the island’s natural beauty and key historical sites.
