In 2000, the scimitar-horned oryx, an animal native to Africa was considered to be extinct due to rampant poaching. Named after its majestic black horns, it could survive for months without water and sense variations in the air from at least 100 km away. However, due to the timely intervention of a visionary leader, the founding father of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the animal was reintroduced to the wild recently.
A few Oryx were transported from Chad to Abu Dhabi in 1990 when their population decreased alarmingly. They were looked after in a nature reserve located in Sir Bani Yas Island, which is also home to several Abu Dhabi resorts including the likes of Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara. A 30-minute documentary was screened on Sunday at the Emirates Palace for guests before its scheduled broadcast on April 28th 2018.
