The vegetarian festival is celebrated by the Thais on the 9th lunar month of each year. This celebration initially originated in China to venerate the nine emperor gods. It is a period of 9 days where devotees abstain from eating fish, meat, dairy or poultry products for a total of 9 days. It is also imperative that followers are clothed in white from head to toe. During these nine days, the Chinese temples are full of crowds visiting to perform various rituals and pray.

This festival may not be all that colourful in décor, however, it does involve some gruesome acts of devotion such as tongue slashing. Festivities are in full swing in China Town in Bangkok with food stalls marked with yellow and red flags to let passers-by know that they are selling vegan food. In these boutiques, you will find all kinds of food and even fake meat!  It is a festival that is definitely worth your time if you happen to be accommodated around the corner, for example, in Anantara Baan Rajprasong Bangkok Serviced Suites or any other Bangkok serviced apartments.
