The Maldives experienced a notable influx of wealthy businesses magnets and entrepreneurs, along with their families, who arrived on the island, to celebrate the Easter holidays at some of the most luxurious and premier Maldives island hotels including the likes of Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives. The Velana International Airport housed a total of 29 private jets belonging to the guests in their hangers during this period of time.

Initially having enjoyed success in terms of tourism in 2017 with a total of 1.3 million visitors, the Tourism Ministry of the Maldives expected an even higher number this year. However, due to the state of emergency which was declared on the 5th February 2018 by incumbent President Abdulla Yameen prior to the Easter holidays, the island nation experienced a severe decline in tourist arrivals and many cancellations on bookings.
