Maldivians Getting Ready to Celebrate the Republic Day in November 2018 – Celebrating the Proclamation of a Republic

The Sultanate in the Maldives stood for a long period of time beginning from the year 1153 AD. This era began after the ruling Buddhist king at the time converted to Islam. In 1887, the sultan signed an agreement with the British ruling in Sri Lanka and thus, the Maldives became a British protectorate. In the beginning, the citizens of Male were not in favour of changing from a sultanate into a republic and so, resulted in 2 failed attempts. Later, after gaining independence from the British, a majority of the people voted for a republic and in 1968, on the 11th of November the official announcement was made.

The 11th of November is not just a day of celebration, but also the day on which a new president is introduced every 5 years. The festivities take place in all the tiny islands of the Maldives. Visiting the islands during this period will allow one to get a glimpse of the Maldivian culture through the celebrations. Maldives island resorts too will be celebrating in full swing and hotels like Naladhu Private Island Maldives will be heavily booked during this season as visitors start coming in to witness this wonderful feast.
