National Bird Watching Month – Feathered Wonders of Sri Lanka

Showcasing the rich biodiversity of Sri Lanka, the National Bird Watching Month which is set for December, highlights the many endemic and migratory avifauna species that call the island home. Featuring wetlands, rainforests, mountains and coastal getaways, Sri Lanka features all types of bird species that have made the country a bird watching hotspot.

The Ceylon blue magpie, layard’s parakeet, oriental dwarf kingfisher, emerald dove and Tickells’s blue fly catcher are among the species one has a chance of spotting. During this special month which has been organised by the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, national parks and sanctuaries such as the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary, Kumana National Park and Udawatte Kele will host varied activities for enthusiasts. The Udawatte Kele or Udawattakele Sanctuary can be found in the hill country of Sri Lanka and if you are in the region consider staying at Jetwing St. Andrews, an ideal base in the central province where one can also visit the Horton Plains National Park, home to more bird species.
