As a part of the largest expansion and development project undertaken at the main airport in Maldives, the new run away will be opened for operations in 2019. According to the Maldives Airport Company Ltd (MACL), a test flight has landed on the strip on 18th September 2018. The main aim of building this new run away is to boost safety, service and capacity levels. The majority of the construction work of the runaway has been completed except for the navigation light system, levelling and the development of the taxiway.
