Sri Lanka: Future Leaders of “Blue Economy” – The Rise of the Young Mariners Association

In 2016, a total of 170 countries united and signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena was among those present at the event. Among the measures that were taken to ensure the wellbeing of Sri Lanka’s natural landscape is the development of a Young Mariner’s Association.

The nation is a popular tourist destination, and as a result there are many resorts in Sri Lanka, with a great number of them, such as Blue Water Wadduwa. This is because Sri Lankan beaches are renowned for their beauty as well as their abundance of marine life.

The Young Mariner’s Association will give children aged 5-18 the chance to discover and learn about the ocean in all its complexities, and hopefully foster compassion and concern towards its health.
