A move that that is expected to increase the number of tourist arrivals, the Gan Airport was opened recently in the Maldives. While the main Malé International Airport handles the bulk of the flights entering the country, this new airport is expected to not only add to the available options, but also provide convenient internal flights to those seeking to get to their resort in Maldives. At present, many island resorts such as PER AQUUM Niyama Maldives are accessible by seaplane flights from the main airport. The new Gan Airport is situated near Addu in the Maldives and currently features four weekly flights from Colombo aboard an Airbus 320 operated by SriLankan Airlines. Originally used as a UK Royal Force refilling base, this renovated airport is expected to expand its services in the future and provide convenient transport options for island resort owners as well.
