Malaysia gained independence from the British on August 31st, 1957, known as Hari Kebangsaan Malaysia or Merdeka Day. The historical roots trace back to the Malacca Sultanate around 1400 A.D., which thrived due to its strategic location between East and West Asia.
Malacca’s prosperity and strategic position attracted traders, including Middle Eastern Muslims who introduced Islam to the region. This golden era ended when the Portuguese invaded in 1511, followed by colonisation by the Dutch, British, and Japanese. Independence was declared by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj on August 31, 1957. Hari Kebangsaan, celebrated annually with parades and festivities, used to be held at Merdeka Square but has since moved to Putra Square in Putrajaya. The celebrations, showcasing Malaysia’s multicultural unity, feature various public services, schools, and cultural performances, with free shuttle services to ease transport. Stay at the best resorts in Langkawi such as the Temple Tree Resort to take part in the festivities. The event highlights the unity of Malaysians from diverse backgrounds.
