Vesak or Vesak Poya is one of the main festivals celebrated by Buddhists in Sri Lanka. This day is of great historical and religious significance as it commemorates the birth, attaining of enlightenment and passing of Lord Buddha. Colourful lanterns made out of bamboo, papers and bright lights adorn almost every household and street Pandols with bright displays too brighten up the streets as they convey the story of the three stages of Lord Buddha. During Vesak, pilgrims dressed fully in white fill temples, offering prayers and flowers to Lord Buddha.
