Jembrana, West Bali, plays home to a major grand prix known by the name of Makepung. The event features buffalo racing where hundreds of buffalo pairs are teamed together with their respective jockeys. Traditional wooden ploughs which are slightly modified are used in the competition. During this event, tourists compete to be the ones to grab accommodation in the best hotel. Ubud rises to the occasion by offering several venues such as the Alila Ubud Baliwhich offer comfortable lodgings.
The Buffalo Races, which are celebrated on a grand-scale, draw their inspiration from a rather simple and traditional pastime, and have helped preserve the unique customs of this part of the island. The Races have also helped to promote tourism in a relatively remote destination and have greatly aided the local agricultural sector.
