Phuket International Airport has introduced automated immigration gates for arriving international travellers, becoming the first airport in Thailand to offer the service for inbound passengers. Previously available only for departures, the new arrival e-gates allow eligible visitors with e-passports to complete immigration clearance without joining staffed counters.
The system was officially launched by Airport General Manager Monchai Tanode, who also confirmed plans to expand the number of arrival e-gates from 10 to 21. At the same time, the number of staffed immigration counters will be reduced from 24 to 16. The service is currently available only to travellers with e-passports. It was introduced in response to frequent complaints about lengthy waiting times and aims to ease congestion during Phuket’s peak tourism periods.
For travellers staying at properties such as Avadina Hills by Anantara, the faster immigration process indicates less time spent at the airport and more time enjoying attractions across Phuket, from its renowned beaches to scenic hilltop viewpoints. Officials expect the expanded e-gate system to further improve passenger flow as international arrivals continue to grow.
