Indonesia and Japan have strengthened their tourism partnership by signing a Memorandum of Cooperation in Tokyo between Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, and Japan’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), Yasushi Kaneko. Signed during President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit and concluding more than two years of constructive discussions, the agreement marks the first formal tourism cooperation framework between the two countries. It covers joint destination promotion, wellness and cultural tourism, sustainable destination development, enhanced aviation connectivity, and improved tourist safety.
According to Widiyanti, Japanese visitor arrivals to Indonesia exceeded 380,000 in 2025, representing an increase of around 12% when compared with the previous year. The Tokyo–Bali route remains one of the primary gateways for Japanese travellers visiting the island. Many visitors travelling along this route choose to stay in Ubud, where resorts and luxury villas for sale offer serene retreats surrounded by lush rice terraces.
Kaneko noted that people-to-people exchanges between Indonesia and Japan surpassed one million in 2025, highlighting the continued growth of travel between the two countries. Both ministers described the agreement as a strategic step towards diversifying tourism across East Asia, with resorts such as Anantara Ubud Bali Villas expected to benefit from more consistent demand from the Japanese market.
