Food Tourism Integral to Boosting Cambodian Economy

High-ranking officials and those within the tourism industry of Cambodia met recently at the first-ever International Conference on Cambodian Gastronomy and Food Tourism. The event took place in August at the Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel. The role of food tourism to attract more visitors to the country as well as to boost the local economy was discussed at the conference.

It is hoped that moving forward, greater emphasis will be placed on promoting Cambodia’s culinary offerings and how it can be used to connect with the tourism industry. Furthermore, by highlighting and promoting local food traditions, economic development can also be fostered. Authentic culinary experiences are a major draw for tourists and Cambodia is no exception be it for those staying in a budget hostel in Phnom Penh or a boutique hotel in Siem Reap. Taking things a step further, properties such as Anantara Angkor Resort offer special cooking classes where guests can also learn the art of preparing traditional Cambodian dishes.
