Independence Day in Maldives in 2023 – A Celebration of Freedom

Maldivian Independence celebrates the end of a century of British rule over the island, gaining independence on July 26th, 1965. The struggle for independence was borne out of the Maldivian people wanting control over their affairs, free of the British imperial powers. Gaining momentum all the way back in the 20th century, eventually, the two nations signed an agreement granting full autonomy to the Maldives.

Naturally, this is a day of much joy to the population of the Maldives, and they celebrate accordingly. Locals gather to reflect on and appreciate their struggles and achievements. Travellers to the island in the month of July can witness the traditional flag-hoisting ceremony, which is what the day starts off with. This is followed by colourful parades and marches conducted by National Security Service and the National Cadet Corps. It is also a good time to try out authentic cuisine in the Maldives. An all-inclusive resort such as the likes of VARU by Atmosphere will have a wide variety of local dishes for you to try out during your stay.
