International Conference on E-Education, E-Business and E-Technology

The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, in collaboration with the Trade Ministry, is actively promoting the expansion of duty-free outlets as a strategy to enhance shopping tourism in the country. Deputy Minister Angela Tanoesoedibjo emphasized the potential benefits of the duty-free program, which stimulates the economy, generates employment opportunities, attracts investment, and positively impact micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Under this program, foreign tourists can enjoy tax-free shopping for a wide range of local products, including food and beverages, clothing, accessories, and more.

Tanoesoedibjo highlighted the importance of planning and conscious shopping among tourists, pointing out that shopping tourism is expected to surge both domestically and internationally. The global retail market reached a staggering size of 55.74 billion USD in 2022, with projections indicating it will double by 2030. In terms of tourist expenditure, Indonesian travellers allocated approximately 17% of their budget to food and beverages, 12.44% to shopping, and 5.4% to souvenirs in 2021. Conversely, foreign tourists spent the most on culinary experiences, accounting for 21.94% of their budget, followed by shopping at 10% and souvenirs at 3.2%, according to the ministry.

With the expansion of duty-free outlets, Indonesia aims to tap into the growing shopping tourism sector, providing an attractive environment for both local and international shoppers. By offering a tax-free shopping experience and showcasing a diverse array of products, the country strives to boost its economy, create employment opportunities, and support the growth of MSMEs while providing tourists with unique and memorable shopping experiences. After your luxurious shopping spree, you can head towards more unexplored and uncommon destinations in the country that offer unique experiences such as South Kalimantan and then retreat to your comfortable hotel for some much-needed rest and relaxation.
