Japan is Swamped With Tourists: Now Visitors are Going Off the Beaten Track

Japan, a country that has previously dealt with the challenges of “overtourism,” observed an increase in the number of visitors, reaching a peak of 32 million in 2019 after eight years of consecutive inbound growth. The famous Golden Route, which spans from Tokyo through Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe, became a focal point, putting a strain on the historical districts, shrines, temples, and museums.

Despite the pandemic-induced lull, July 2023 saw 2.3 million foreign tourists, hinting at a potential resurgence. China’s recent decision to lift a three-year ban on group tours to Japan is anticipated to amplify arrivals, as seen in the 2019 influx of 9.2 million Chinese tourists. While urban areas grapple with over-tourism, rural locales, World Heritage sites, islands, hiking trails, and national parks may benefit from an increased influx of visitors. This goes for adventurous spots as well, with stays at a Niseko Japan ski resort the likes of Chatrium Niseko Japan ready to welcome visitors for a spot of skiing.
