In response to the rebound in tourism following the easing of COVID-19 border restrictions, the Japanese government is actively promoting the expansion of its electronic visa services. Government officials revealed that the Foreign Ministry initiated the online visa service in March, initially available in 11 countries and regions, later adding China in June.
This move is aimed at simplifying and expediting the visa application process for foreign visitors. Notably, the system allows eligible applicants to secure short-term stay visas without the need to visit a local Japanese embassy or consulate. As tourism numbers show promising signs of recovery, with 15.19 million foreign tourists entering Japan in the first eight months of this year, representing 69 percent of the pre-pandemic figures from 2019, officials credit the electronic visa system for contributing to this positive trend. Visitors can now enjoy holidays in the many iconic destinations in Japan, taking up accommodation at hotels near Shinjuku Station the likes of Hotel Groove Shinjuku.
