Kandy Esala Perahera 2021 – An amazing cultural experience

Sri Lanka has been hosting its most graceful procession ‘Kandy Perahera’ (also known as Esala Perahera or Dalada Perahera) to pay due respect for the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. According to online travel sites such as Kandy Escapes, the procession has started in the 3rd century BC and it kept growing up to the level of one of the grandest processions in South Asia year by year, with many cultural performances getting added up.

The 1st perahera (Kumbul Perahera) will be on the 13th of August and the last one (Day Perehera) will be held on the 23rd of August 2021. The most glamorous and grandest one (Final Maha Randoli Perahera) will be held on the 22nd of August 2021. Although Kandy, Sri Lanka gets completely packed with tourists and local visitors during this period the other years, things will see a difference due to the COVID 19 pandemic this year.
