The Easala Perahera in Kandy is one of the most iconic events to look forward to in the month of August in Sri Lanka. This year, the dates for this religious and cultural ceremony would be the 21st to the 23rd. The Esala Perahera is a celebration of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha brought to Sri Lanka in ancient times. Special rituals take place in the temple after which the sacred relic is placed on the back of an elephant and taken on a flamboyant procession.
The procession consists of a parade of entertaining dances dressed in traditional dance costumes and cartwheels of fire, stilt walkers and elephants adorned in vibrant attire. Many locals and foreigners staying at Earls Regency and other Kandy hotels in Sri Lanka flock to watch this amazing event. Those who plan on attending can book tickets online to reserve a spot.
