Malaysia’s domestic tourism industry experienced a remarkable resurgence in the second quarter of 2024, with 68.4 million visitors, marking a 23.8% increase from the previous year. The visitor numbers for this quarter were 16.8% higher than those in the first quarter.
Expenditure surged to RM28.1 billion, a 28.6% increase compared to the previous year and a 16.9% rise from the first quarter. Domestic tourism welcomed 213.7 million arrivals in 2023, reflecting a significant 24.6% increase from 2022, and generated RM84.9 billion in revenue, a 32.5% surge. Shopping, food, accommodation, and fuel were the main contributors to tourism income.
The primary purpose of most domestic travels was to visit family members. On average, visitors stayed for 2.45 nights, with Sarawak and Kelantan experiencing longer visits. The income of visitors varied based on the regions they came from. As a result of these developments, resorts, and hotels are anticipated to experience positive impacts. An example of this is Anantara Desaru Coast Residences, a perfect option for individuals looking to purchase property in Johor Bahru.
