The pandemic-hit Maldives welcomed its first tourists on 1st January 2022 from the UK. With the pandemic being mediated around the world, the Maldives holds out hope for 2 million visitors in 2022.
The Maldives reached its 2021 goal of welcoming 1 million visitors when the country was visited by 1.3 million travellers. With travel restrictions being lifted, the second half of last year was a positive term for the country in terms of tourism. The country saw 11-million bed nights placing the resort hotels the likes of Hard Rock Hotel Maldives back on track. And the country is hoping for 10-million bed nights this year and an increase in resort activities in Maldives. As a tourist destination that was once the most sought-after beach destination in Asia, the Maldives is doing quite well, considering that the tourism industry came to a complete halt in response to the pandemic.
