Mawakada Canal Gets a Helping Hand – Eco-friendly Initiative from Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon

To commemorate World Cleanup Day in September this year, Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon joined hands with the Hikkaduwa Urban Council to help clean up the local Mawakada Canal. Highlighting the sustainable Environmental, Social, and Governance approach of leading hospitality brand, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, the hotel’s team actively participated in this project. With a collaborative effort, a total of 35 kg of glass debris and 40 kg of plastic waste was removed from this tidal canal’s ocean strainer; this was significant since it helped to prevent these materials from entering and harming delicate marine ecosystems in the sea.

An ideal choice for those in search of eco-friendly 4-star hotels in Hikkaduwa, this property had more to accomplish, keeping to its commitment to sustainability efforts and preservation of the environment. As an added initiative, on the same day, it also organised and successfully carried out a mangrove planting programme along the Mawakada Canal. During this time, more than 20 mangrove plants were put in the ground along the banks and are expected to play a vital role in preserving the wetland ecosystem and protecting the area from coastal erosion.
