National Day Celebrations

52 years of Mauritian Independence

Mauritians celebrated their National Day on the 12th of March – the date they gained independence from Britain in 1968 and became a republic in 1992. The island’s vibrant flag could be seen waving proudly all over the nation – from resident homes to shops and schools – as citizens commemorated this public holiday. Various parades, including ones conducted by the military, took place throughout the island alongside traditional dance and music performances. Police and naval helicopters also performed fly-past exercises at certain celebrations for the crowd’s entertainment.

Of course, the festivities weren’t just for the locals either, many travellers and vacationers looking for things to do in Mauritius joined in on the celebrations. Non-locals would also have no real trouble finding accommodations on the island as a wide selection of hotels and resorts were available to choose from – The Residence Mauritius by Cenizaro for one.
