Poson Festival Celebrated in Sri Lanka – Marking the Birth of Buddhism on the Island

On the 3rd of June this year, Sri Lanka celebrated its annual Poson Festival, a key event for the majority Buddhist population on this island nation. Poson is a time that commemorates the birth of Buddhism in the country in the 3rd century BC. It was during this time that Arahat Mahinda, a Buddhist monk arrived from India and shared the message and teachings of Lord Buddha with King Devanampiyatissa which led to his conversion. Subsequently, Sri Lanka became a Buddhist nation and Buddhism continues to play an important role in the local culture.

One of the key places that Buddhist devotees make a pilgrimage to during the Poson Festival is the Ambasthale Dagoba on the mountain called Mihintale, where King Devanampiyatissa is believed to have been converted. Those visiting during this time can witness cultural observances and events across the island including at destinations like Nuwara Eliya; boutique villa options on offer at properties here like Oliphant Boutique Hotel by Amaya provide an ideal base from which to explore and experience Sri Lanka’s hill country as well.
