Qaumee Dhuvas in Maldives in 2023 – A Celebration of Heritage

Qaumee Dhuvas is a public holiday meant to celebrate the National Day of the country. The holiday falls on the 1st of Rabee ul Awwal, which, in the Islamic calendar, is the third month. Qaumee Dhuvas literally translates to ‘National Day’ in Dhivehi, the native language of the Maldives.

The National Day commemorates the victorious Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam, who fought valiantly against Portuguese colonialism in 1573. Along with his two brothers, the chivalrous Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam orchestrated a revolt against the Portuguese attempt to impose Christianity on the Muslim population and successfully ejected the colonisers from the island. He passed away from natural causes after his reign as Sultan and has been celebrated and loved for generations following his death. Parades and vibrant celebrations and far and plenty across all the islands, and many visitors join in on this wonderful time, as many all-inclusive resorts in Maldives including properties such as VARU by Atmosphere help direct them to the best spots.
