Seaplanes and a Bigger Airport: The Maldives Expands to Attract More Tourists – Enhancing Connectivity and Embracing Sustainability

The Maldives is taking significant steps to attract more tourists by expanding Velana International Airport and enhancing its seaplane terminal. With tourist arrivals increasing by 10% in 2024 compared to the same period last year, the airport’s expansion, including the commercial terminal, cargo services, and VIP/CIP terminal, is set to boost the nation’s tourism industry. These developments are part of a broader strategy to cater to growing tourism demands while ensuring environmental resilience.

Additionally, the Maldives is exploring the possibility of 24/7 seaplane operations by installing lights on water runways. This move will further improve access to the country’s many islands, including those home to Maldives five-star hotels. As the Maldives strengthens its infrastructure, luxury accommodations like Adaaran Vadoo stand to benefit from the increased accessibility and continued growth in tourism.
