Songkran Celebrated in Thailand – Koh Samui Amongst Key Festival Hotspots

The traditional Thai New Year known as Songkran was celebrated this month with eager participation amongst locals and foreigners alike. Running from the 13th to the 15th of April each year, this cultural festival is celebrated across the country with plenty of activities in destinations like Koh Samui. Family resort options by the beach here, such as Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort, provided the ideal base from which visitors could join in the fun; this included the customary tradition of engaging in friendly water fights and parties at coastal locales like Chaweng and Lamai.

Songkran is seen as a time of renewal and the sprinkling of water is symbolic of cleansing any misfortune from the previous year; it is this custom that has transformed into the water fights which take place throughout the streets and beaches. During this time, people also get together with family, visit temples, bathe images of Buddha, engage in almsgiving to Buddhist monks and perform merit-making acts. In towns like Nathon in Koh Samui, visitors had the chance to enjoy the more traditional rituals of Songkran which provided unique experiences.
