Sri Lanka is determined to solidify its position as a premier luxury tourism destination, driving economic growth and elevating its global tourism profile. As highlighted in a Daily FT news article on 5th August 2024, Priantha Fernando, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) emphasised the sector’s potential for significant growth; this has been fuelled by substantial investments and a strategic focus on attracting high-spending tourists.
The Investment Relations Unit (IRU) of the SLTDA has witnessed a surge in interest, receiving 39 project proposals for new hotels in the first half of 2024, representing a total investment of approximately $55 million. Of these, 16 projects had been approved by the end of June, with an investment value of $26 million. This positive trend reflects growing confidence in Sri Lanka’s tourism potential and its appeal as a luxury destination, though the country must ensure that its products and services align with international standards.
While areas like Bentota, Kalpitiya and the Delft Islands have been identified for tourism development, it should be noted that cities such as Kandy remain a popular choice for luxurious getaways at properties like Hotel Topaz. From rooms with contemporary comforts to refined dining and authentic ayurvedic spa treatments, such Kandy, Sri Lanka hotels offer truly unforgettable stays.
