Sri Lanka’s tourism industry carried on its impressive comeback, with visitor arrivals exceeding 850,000 as of 17th May 2024. This surge translates to significant economic benefits, with tourism earnings having already surpassed $1.25 billion in the first four months of the year. According to figures released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, this is a remarkable 91.9% increase in tourism receipts compared to the same period in 2023. The country is thus optimistic about reaching its target of 2.3 million arrivals for 2024, with projected revenue exceeding $4 billion.
By mid-May this year, India was the leading source market, accounting for 16% of visitors, followed by Russia (13%), the United Kingdom (9%), Germany (7%), and China (6%). Sri Lanka’s diverse offerings continue to attract a global audience as well. Tourists flock to this destination not only for the idyllic beaches on the southern coast but also, for captivating mountain retreats in Kandy. Hotels located in this picturesque part of the island such as Cinnamon Citadel Kandy remain a popular draw providing a convenient base for travellers to experience the region’s rich history and breathtaking natural beauty.
