Sri Lanka is set to celebrate the grand Thai Pongal festival in 2025. The festival is a significant celebration in Hindu culture and is held every year on the 14th or 15th of January. It is held in thanksgiving to the Sun God who is said to provide strength, energy, and light for paddy cultivation. These are considered important blessings as rice is the staple food in many South Asian countries like India and Sri Lanka where the festival is widely celebrated.
The Tamil communities celebrate the event by preparing two varieties of Pongal rice, one sweet and the other non-sweet. These are then presented as offerings to the Sun God in gratitude for the blessings received. For tourists staying in Colombo hotels like NH Collection Colombo, witnessing the colourful celebrations, rituals and prayers that take place in the city is one of the intriguing Colombo things to do in January.
