Sri Lanka to take forward National Sustainable Destination Certificate – Sustainability matters!

With the financial and technical assistance of UNDP Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority decided to introduce the National Sustainable Destination Certificate (NSDC) to the country’s tourism industry. The first destination chosen for this initiation was Sigiriya- the most loved cultural and historical heritage in Sri Lanka. The project also aimed to develop other nearby attractions such as Pidurangala and Kalu Diya Pokuna which are popular searches on sites such as Truly Sri Lanka by the foreign traveler community.

The project aims at promoting sustainable tourism practices among key players in the tourism industry, which includes hotels, travel agents, and even small-scale businessmen. Right after the first phase of this initiation, other places to visit in Sri Lanka will also be considered by the officials. Awareness workshops and seminars are being planned to be launched concurrently because sustainability really matters to a country like Sri Lanka which is full of natural resources.
