Sri Lanka welcomed its two millionth tourist of 2024 on 26th December of the same year, marking the first time since 2018 that the country achieved such numbers. Thai national Prasan Ingkanunt, arriving with family members on flight UL 403, represented this significant milestone. The tourism sector showed remarkable recovery with daily arrivals exceeding 10,000 in the past week, substantially outpacing 2023’s total of 1.4 million visitors. The resolution of online visa issues following President Dissanayake’s ascension to power in September 2024 contributed significantly to this resurgence.

The island’s popularity as a travel destination was further evidenced by international recognition, including 21 prestigious accolades in 2024. Visitors increasingly explored beyond coastal regions, with many travellers enjoying stays at establishments like Kings Pavilion Kandy, a notable accommodation option in the cultural heartland. The Kandy luxury hotel sector benefited from this tourism boom as the government pursued ambitious targets of three million arrivals and USD 5 billion in revenue by 2025, supported by plans to extend free visa facilities to travelers from 39 countries.
